How to Apply for Unemployment Insurance in Ohio

“How can I sign up for unemployment in Ohio?” is a question many unemployed workers may ask themselves. If you are wondering how to apply for unemployment online in Ohio, you should know that you can file online or by phone. Regardless of whether you complete an online application for unemployment or apply by phone, you are going to need to have all of the required documents on hand. Through either of these methods, you can also file a new unemployment claim or restart an existing claim. How Can I Sign Up for Unemployment in Ohio?

If you are wondering how to apply for unemployment benefits in Ohio, you can do so through the state’s Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations website. You can file for an unemployment claim In OH 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but service can be limited while the website is being updated, which occurs daily. If you do not currently have access to a computer, you can visit your local library where computers are available for public use.

It is important to note that when you file for unemployment in Ohio, the information you enter will be kept for 24 hours from the time you begin a new unemployment insurance claim. Your OH unemployment registration application is not considered “filed” until you receive a confirmation number. You will need to keep this in mind if you choose to sign off and then plan on signing in at a later time or if you are suddenly disconnected from the application process. If your choice of where to register for unemployment benefits involves applying by phone, you may call between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Peak call times are usually Monday and Friday, so for faster service, you may want to call on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

To file an online application for unemployment in Ohio, or file by phone, you will need to have the following information ready when you apply:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Either your driver’s license or state ID number
  • Your name, address, telephone number, and an email address

To file for an unemployment EDD application in Ohio, you are also going to need the name, address and phone number for each employer during the past six weeks of your employment. You will also need to provide the reason for why you became totally or partially unemployed from each employer and provided the dates in which you worked with each of these employers. If you were on an assignment for a temporary placement agency, also known as a “temp” agency, the agency, and not the employer that they assigned to you, is the employer that you would need to identify.

Out-Of-State Unemployment in Ohio

If you are curious about where to apply for unemployment in Ohio if you have been employed out of state during the last 18 months, you can still apply online or over the phone. However, to apply for UI benefits in OH, you will need the name, address, phone number and dates you worked for each of the out-of-state employers. If you are separated from military service with any branch of the US armed forces in the last 18 months, then the discharge papers will need to be provided. If you apply for unemployment benefits and were employed by the federal government over the last 18 months, then you will need to provide the forms that were given to you by your government employer during the time of your separation.

An unemployment petitioner can file for an unemployment claim outside of Ohio if the base period employment was in Ohio and they now live in and are seeking active work in another state. On your application, your unemployment claim will show as an “Ohio interstate claim.” If those interested in unemployment compensation worked in more than one state during the base period, they might qualify for unemployment by combining wages from those separate states. If you plan to file a “combined wage claim” on your Ohio unemployment registration, an unemployment applicant must apply for benefits with one of the other states in which the base wages period was reported.

How to Apply for Unemployment Online with Dependents and Spouses

If you have dependents when you file an unemployment EDD application in OH, you will need their names, date of births, and Social Security numbers. If you are married and are claiming dependents, you will need your spouse’s name and Social Security number, even if you do not plan to claim your spouse. If you are living in the US and you are not a US citizen, you will provide your alien registration number and the expiration date of your work authorization. Lastly, you will need to list your regular occupation and job skills.

For unemployment registration in OH, the definition of a “dependent” child or spouse is different from the definition used for your income tax purposes. When you apply for unemployment benefits, you can claim a child, stepchild, or an adopted child as a dependent if both of the following conditions are met:

  1. The child is under the age of 18 at the beginning date of the unemployment applicants benefit year or the child is 18 or older and unable to work because of a physical or mental disability.
  2. You have paid more than half of the cost of the child’s support for the 90-day period before the beginning date of an unemployment applicant’s benefit year, or for the length of the parental relationship if it is less than 90 days.

To claim a spouse when you apply for unemployment eligibility in Ohio, a spouse needs to be your spouse for at least 90 days before the beginning of your benefit year. Or, for the length of the marital relationship if it has existed for less than 90 days and your spouse meets the following conditions:

  • Is legally married to you
  • Lives with you under the same residence
  • Had income less than 25 percent of the base period weekly average wage
  • Had more than 50 percent of his or her support provided to you, the unemployment petitioners

How Long Will It Take to File for Unemployment in Ohio?

In the state of Ohio, an unemployment EDD application, whether you apply online or by phone, can take up to 20-25 minutes to process. If you are filling out an unemployment application online and you need to sign off before you can finish the application, you can log back in later, as long as it is within 24 hours from your start date. You can then continue your Ohio unemployment registration right where you left off. Your application is not considered “filed” until you receive a confirmation number at the end of the application process.
